Blood testing is one of the most important tools we have to help us diagnose illness in cats.
In the early stages of diseases, pets may not exhibit or show signs of illness. A blood test allows us to learn information about your cat’s health which can only be found from collecting a sample of blood and having it analyzed. Blood testing will enable us to detect illness as early as possible, so we can address problems sooner and implement treatments to slow disease progression.
Information obtained from blood tests helps to prevent and treat potentially dangerous illnesses. For example, sick or senior pets often have more than one chronic disease affecting them, complicating diagnosis and treatment. Blood tests can help in revealing these problems. Additionally, some medications can harm pets with underlying problems like kidney or liver disease. Blood tests can ensure your pet is healthy enough to take the medication. Younger and healthy pets may also benefit from lab testing which gives us a valuable baseline picture of what represents good health for your individual pet.
The blood test results are available from our in-house blood machine within 20-30 minutes. If a more comprehensive blood profile is needed, the blood is shipped out to a reference laboratory, depending on the test, the results are typically back to us within 48 hours.
Although they may not like it, many cats do well with blood sampling. We have excellent veterinary technologists who are trained to handle your cat and obtain blood samples in the least stressful method possible. However, some cats may feel very distressed during minimal handling or blood sampling. If your cat becomes agitated or aggressive, options are available to help them be more relaxed. These options can always be discussed with the veterinarian team.
Our veterinarians recommend blood work along with a complete physical exam annually. The frequency and type of blood testing may differ according to your cat’s age, health status, or the type of medications prescribed to your cat regularly.
Yes, a urinalysis test can be performed to give us a more comprehensive picture of your cat’s overall health. Our trained technologists can perform this in our in-house laboratory. Additionally, urine samples can be sent to a reference laboratory for more comprehensive or additional tests.
